Gender Selection

Gender selection methods are used to choose the sex of a baby prior to conception. In other words, gender selection technologies now allow us to choose the sex/gender of your baby before you are even pregnant! There are many reasons why couples might want to select the sex of their future baby. One of these reasons is the possibility of baby’s increased predisposition to genetic disorders when of certain gender. Some patients may have a higher risk of passing down an X-linked (sex-linked) disease to their offspring, meaning, choosing the sex of your child can possibly reduce the likelihood of your child having a genetic disorder.

Other families might opt for gender selection for family balancing purposes as they already have a number of children of the same sex and they would like to have another child of the opposite sex for family balancing as opposed to trying to find the “right” sex and having more children than they can possibly take care of. Some families might only be interested in having a single child and they may want to select the gender of this child. With gender selection methods offered at North Cyprus IVF Center, we offer treatment to all these groups of patients. There are two distinct methods of gender selection at North Cyprus IVF Center:

1-MicroSort Sperm Sorting

MicroSort sperm sorting technology, which is a patented technology from the Genetics and IVF Institute. Our clinic is the only official clinic in Europe, Asia and the Middle East to offer this technology. No other clinics (unless they request us to perform the sperm sorting for them) are authorized to offer this gender selection technology to their patients. MicroSort technology works based on DNA density and separates the sperm into X and Y bearing cells in two different compartments of the MicroSort equipment. This method has about 75% accuracy with male gender selection and around 90% accuracy with female gender selection. In other words, once the sperm has been sorted into desired sex, the sperm that we have will contain 75% male sperm cells if you asked for male selection and 90% female sperm cells if you asked for female selection. The reason for the error margin is because the equipment works on the principle of differing DNA densities between X and Y chromosomes. When sperm has defects such as missing parts of its information, it can be misclassified into the wrong group. The official numbers show us that the accuracy for male and female selection are exactly as the statistics provided above.

Even though MicroSort is not a 100% gender selection method due to its margin of error, it still provides a very good rate. Especially if you are not too specific over gender selection but would like to maximize your chances of having a child of desired sex, MicroSort will be a good idea.

One of the advantages of the MicroSort technology is that, it allows us to offer gender selection with non-invasive IUI cycles. IUI cycles require much milder medication regimens and don’t require any surgical procedures. The chance of being able to choose the sex of your baby without any invasive procedures is a good option for most couples.

However, it should be kept in mind that MicroSort IUI is most suited for younger couples in their 20s and overall success rates of pregnancy with IUI cycles will be around 25%. It’s a low cost and non-invasive option, but its success rates will not be as high as the IVF treatment options.

2- PGD – Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis

PGD is a method we have been using for over a decade for genetic screening and gender selection. PGD is also a pre conception gender selection method, but it does its screening at the embryo level. For PGD to be performed, eggs must be fertilized with the sperm, and the embryos should be created in vitro (laboratory setting). Once the embryos are created, they are cultivated for three days until they reach at least the 8-cell stage so that the doctor can take at least a single cell biopsy from each embryo for further genetic screening by our geneticist. Further genetic screening will be able to help us screen all the embryos for genetic disorders as well as determining the gender (sex) of each of them. Given that PGD is a very sophisticated genetic screening procedure, its precision is higher than 99% for selection of both sexes.

The higher accuracy of the PGD gender selection is not its only benefit. PGD can also help us screen for major genetic disorders as well. Typically, we test 5 chromosomes if there is no expected incidence of a specific genetic disorder. However, we are also able to perform the 24 chromosome test to test for all chromosomes for genetic abnormalities. There is an additional cost of performing the 24 chromosome testing per embryo, but it will make sure that the embryos that are transferred are completely free of genetic disorders.

This method is ideal for couples who would like high accuracy with gender selection. Also, if you are younger than 35 years of age and have a satisfactory level of ovarian reserves, then the PGD method will give you a high chance of success. Above the age of 37/38, chances of success will be lower compared to younger patients. However, we often recommend combining the MicroSort method with the PGD method if the patient is above a certain age and has lower ovarian reserves. Patients with limited ovarian reserves will not have too much of a chance of success with the PGD method alone because the PGD method will require at least 3-4 embryos to make sure that we can find at least one healthy embryos of desired sex which is also free of genetic disorders. At more advanced ages, genetic problems also become an issue, therefore, we would like to work with at least 3 or 4 embryos when it comes to PGD screening. Combining the MicroSort method with the PGD method will make sure that majority of the embryos will be of desired sex and it will give us a higher chance of finding at least one embryo that is free of genetic disorders and is of desired sex.

Cost of Gender Selection Treatment

Cost of treatment depends on which tye of treatment you would like to receive. The non-invasive MicroSort IUI treatment costs 2,800 Euros including the MicroSort procedure, IUI procedure and your consults while in Cyprus.

The cost of IVF/PGD runs at 5,000 Euros including the IVF protocol, all your medical treatments at our facilities and the pre-implantation genetic screening procedures.

If both treatments are to be combined, then MicroSort IVF/PGD treatment will cost 6,200 Euros. This is the treatment option we recommend patients in older age brackets, but if the patient is releatively younger, then only using one intervention at a time is always more sensible to keep things as close to natural as possible.

Success with Gender Selection at North Cyprus IVF Centre

Success is highly dependent on the age of the female patient, her ovarian function and the male partner’s semen analysis. The older the age, the lower the success with any form of fertility treatments. Therefore, success under 35 years of age is considerably higher than success with patients in more advanced biological ages.
