Knowledge BaseLazer Assisted Hatching
It is now widely known that some patients cannot become pregnant following IVF and embryo transfer due to the fact that the embryo is unable to escape (hatch) from its egg-shell (zona pellucida) to enable implantation on the uterine wall. This is when the creation of a small hole on the zona becomes necessary just prior to embryo transfer. This hole can be created using various techniques, the latest being laser assisted hatching. Mechanical or chemical methods of assisted hatching have the disadvantage of variable hole size and, therefore, there is some risk of damage to the embryos. Laser assisted hatching makes sure the hole is small and just the right size, eliminating the risk of damage to the embryo. Assisted hatching is mainly for older women.
